Festival season is exactly when small WooCommerce sellers lose the most sales to one tiny, avoidable mistake. A customer copies your coupon code from WhatsApp or Instagram, mistypes it at checkout, gets frustrated, and leaves without buying. If you have already set up coupons using WooCommerce’s native tools, or displayed them automatically with a listing plugin, you have solved half the problem. This tutorial covers the other half: making your coupons apply themselves, using the completely free Smart Coupons for WooCommerce plugin by WebToffee. No code, no developer, and no expensive premium plugin required.
According to Razorpay, nearly 70% of Indian e-commerce carts go unpaid — and a mistyped or forgotten coupon code is one of the most common, entirely avoidable reasons why. Whether you sell notebooks, apparel, mugs, or mobile covers, every rupee lost to checkout friction adds up fast, especially during Diwali and other festive sales.
What This Free Plugin Adds On Top Of Your Existing Coupons
If you have followed along with our earlier tutorial on creating coupons natively in WooCommerce, you already know how to build a discount code. And if you added the free WPC Coupon Listing plugin, your coupons already display themselves automatically on the cart page. But neither of those tools can create a genuinely new type of coupon, and neither can decide which coupon to apply on a customer’s behalf.
Smart Coupons for WooCommerce by WebToffee is different. It adds entirely new coupon behaviours on top of what native WooCommerce offers: Buy-One-Get-One (BOGO) offers, one-click URL coupons a customer can activate just by opening a link, giveaway coupons that reward a purchase with a free product, fully automatic coupon application, and a self-serve “My Coupons” tab inside every customer’s account. Think of it as the genuine next layer: manual creation, then automatic display, and now automatic creation and application of coupon types WooCommerce simply doesn’t offer out of the box.
Why Automatic Coupons Matter For Indian Sellers Right Now
The numbers make the case on their own. Criteo research shows 93% of Indians shopped online this Diwali in 2025, a 14% year-on-year jump, with BOGO and bundled offers among the most common promotional formats during that window. The same research found 59% of shoppers cite discounts as their top reason to shop, ahead of free shipping, exclusive products, and fast delivery. And DemandSage’s coupon research shows shoppers who actually use a visible coupon spend up to 24% more per order on average, compared to shoppers who don’t.
Put together, that means a coupon that applies itself — with no code to remember, mistype, or forget — is not a small convenience. It is the difference between a customer who completes checkout and one who abandons a cart because a promo code did not work the way they expected.
Installing Smart Coupons for WooCommerce
Getting started takes less than two minutes, and there is nothing to configure outside your own WordPress dashboard.
- Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard and go to Plugins → Add New.
- In the search field, type Smart Coupons.
- Look for the plugin named Smart Coupons for WooCommerce Coupons by WebToffee and click Install Now.
- Once it finishes installing, click Activate.
WooCommerce must already be active on your site, since this plugin works on top of coupons you already know how to create. As soon as you activate it, you will notice two changes immediately: a new Smart Coupons menu appears in your WordPress admin sidebar, with sub-menu items for All Coupons, Add Coupon, Coupon Category, BOGO, and General Settings — and every existing coupon you have already built gains several brand-new tabs and fields.
New Coupon Fields You Get After Activating
Open any existing coupon under Marketing → Coupons and click Edit. Under the General tab, you will now see three additional fields that were not there before:
- Coupon start date. Schedule a coupon well in advance — set it up for Diwali or Christmas today, and it will automatically start and end on the dates you choose, with nothing left for you to remember on the actual day.
- Apply coupon automatically. Turn this on and the coupon is applied to a qualifying customer’s cart the moment it qualifies — no code to type, no button to click.
- Display coupon in. Choose Cart, Checkout, or My Account, and the coupon shows up there automatically. Unlike a listing plugin that needs a shortcode pasted into a page, this is a simple dropdown inside the coupon itself.
Setting Usage Restrictions
Move to the Usage restriction tab to control exactly when a coupon qualifies. You can restrict a coupon to a specific product category — for example, only A4-size notebooks — so it is automatically skipped for any other product a customer adds to their cart. You can also set a minimum purchase quantity, so the discount only kicks in once a customer buys, say, two items instead of one.
Try to apply the coupon manually outside these rules, and WooCommerce shows a clear message explaining exactly why it does not qualify — “the coupon is not applicable to the selected product,” for instance — so customers are never left confused about why a discount did not apply. Other restrictions available from the same tab include maximum quantity, minimum and maximum cart subtotal, and restriction by product brand.
Setting Usage Limits
The Usage limits tab controls how far a coupon can be pushed. You can cap how many times a coupon is used overall, limit it to a set number of uses on a specific product, restrict it to one use per customer, and — most importantly for your margins — set a maximum discount value.
This last setting matters a lot for a small business. Without a cap, a coupon calculated as a percentage can occasionally discount far more than you intended on a large cart. Setting a maximum, for example ₹300, keeps your margins predictable no matter how big the order gets, while the customer still enjoys the discount you promised them.
Checkout Options: Discounts By Shipping, Payment, Role & Country
Under Checkout options, you can create coupons that reward a specific customer behaviour rather than just a specific cart value. Give an extra discount to customers who pay through an online payment gateway instead of cash on delivery, to encourage upfront payment. Offer a discount for local pickup instead of courier delivery, saving yourself shipping costs on the order. You can even create role-based discounts — a special coupon just for wholesale buyers or shop managers — or restrict a coupon to a specific country if you sell internationally.
Adding A Free Gift With The Give Away Product Tab
This is where Smart Coupons genuinely goes beyond what native WooCommerce offers. The Give away product tab lets you attach a free product to a coupon, on top of whatever discount the coupon already gives. Think of the free pencil or sharpener a stationery shop hands out with a large order — you can now automate exactly that, with no manual packing note needed.
Configure the free product once, and every qualifying customer sees a “Congratulations! Choose your freebie” prompt right on their cart page, with the product added at zero rupees the moment they select it. Combine this with a category restriction and a minimum quantity, and you get a precise, self-running promotion: buy two A4 notebooks, get a small notebook free, automatically.
Creating A BOGO (Buy X, Get X At 50%) Coupon
Buy-One-Get-One offers are common on large platforms like Flipkart and Amazon, and now you can build one for free on your own store. Here is how:
- Go to Smart Coupons → BOGO → Add New.
- Choose the “Buy X, Get X at 50%” template — the free version also includes ready-made “Buy two, get a free gift” and “Spend ₹100, get a free gift” templates.
- Select the specific product the customer must buy, and the specific product they receive free or at a discount. The free version supports this specific-product version of BOGO; category-wide, store-wide, and “buy 2 of the same product, get 1 free” self-referential variants all need the Pro upgrade.
- Set the quantity of the free product and its discount type.
- Under Trigger, choose whether the offer is unlocked by quantity purchased or amount spent, and set the minimum.
- Decide whether the offer applies automatically or needs a coupon code, choose where to display it, and click Save and Activate.
The moment a customer’s cart matches your trigger, the second product is added automatically at the discounted price — no manual step from you, and nothing for your customer to remember or type.
Giveaway Coupons: What’s Free, What Needs Pro
The giveaway coupon and the BOGO feature both use the same “free product” mechanism you configured earlier, and both are genuinely free to use. The one limit worth knowing: the free version lets you attach one product per giveaway or BOGO rule. If you want to offer a customer a choice between several free gifts, that specific flexibility needs the Pro version — but for most small stores, one well-chosen free product does the job just fine.
One-Click URL Coupons For Instagram Bio & WhatsApp
This might be the single most useful feature in the entire plugin. Instead of sending a code that a customer has to remember and type correctly, you send a link. The moment it is clicked, the coupon is applied automatically and the customer lands directly on their cart, ready to check out.
To find it, open any coupon’s edit screen and look at the top right for Copy coupon URL. Share that link in your Instagram bio, a WhatsApp broadcast, or a follow-up email to someone who added a product to their cart and left without buying. Since 93.5% of shoppers expect to redeem coupons via smartphone according to DemandSage, a tappable link removes far more friction than a code typed on a small mobile keyboard.
In the free version, the customer needs to already have a product in their cart for the coupon to apply when they click the link — a great way to win back an abandoned cart. The Pro version goes one step further and can add the qualifying product to the cart automatically too, along with QR-code generation for printed packaging. If you just need a scannable code today, pair this free URL with any free third-party QR generator.
Giving Every Customer Their Own My Coupons Tab
Once the plugin is active, a new My Coupons tab appears automatically inside every logged-in customer’s My Account page, listing every coupon currently available to them. Used coupons move to a separate list on the same page. This means customers stop messaging you on WhatsApp asking “what was that discount code again?” — they can simply log in and check for themselves.
If you have already worked through designing your WooCommerce My Account page, this tab will sit neatly alongside the rest of your account layout with no extra work needed on your part.
Designing Your Coupon Layout
Go to Smart Coupons → General Settings → Layout to style how your coupons look wherever they are displayed. Choose from ready-made layouts, or build a custom colour set that matches your own brand. You can also set separate designs for active, redeemed, and expired coupons, and choose whether expired coupons remain visible in My Account at all. Click Save Settings once you are happy with how everything looks.
Real Examples From Indian Sellers
These features are not just theory — here is how they map onto the kind of small businesses this channel is built for:
- Kirana store going online: a neighbourhood grocery store running WooCommerce for bulk orders sets up a specific-product BOGO — buy a 5kg atta bag, get a small pack of dal free — displayed directly on the product page with no page-builder widget needed.
- Chai stall merchandise store: a chai stall selling branded mugs and tumblers shares a one-click URL coupon in its Instagram bio during a festive push. A follower taps the link, the coupon applies itself, and checkout is one step shorter than typing a code copied from a Story screenshot.
- D2C apparel brand: a clothing brand runs a specific-product BOGO on last season’s stock — buy one shirt, get a second at 50% off — to clear inventory before Diwali, testing the offer for a weekend with zero upfront tool cost.
Free vs Pro: What You Actually Need
Before you configure anything, it’s worth opening the plugin’s own Free vs Pro comparison tab inside your dashboard — treat that as the only fully reliable source for what’s free versus paid, since tiers can shift with plugin updates and third-party articles don’t always keep up. To summarise everything covered in this tutorial: specific-product BOGO, single-product giveaways, the core one-click URL coupon, auto-apply on your 5 most-recently-created coupons, and the My Coupons tab are all completely free. Category-wide and store-wide BOGO, multi-product giveaways, QR codes, custom short links, and auto-apply beyond your 5 newest coupons are Pro features.
For most small sellers in India, the free version alone comfortably covers what you need to run a proper festive-season promotion, and the plugin itself is actively maintained, with 30,000+ active installs and a 4.7-star rating on WordPress.org.
One practical note if you are also running the WPC Coupon Listing plugin from our earlier tutorial: both plugins can try to display a coupon on the checkout page at the same time, in two different visual styles. For a clean checkout experience, turn off WPC Coupon Listing’s checkout shortcode before switching on Smart Coupons’ auto-apply, so your customers see one coupon experience, not two competing ones.
Your store just gained four powerful coupon tricks it lacked — automatic application, one-click links, BOGO offers, and giveaway gifts — all without spending a single rupee on a premium plugin. Try setting up one BOGO or one-click URL coupon on your own store this week, and see how much smoother checkout feels for your customers.
